Introduce your child to The Kampung Boy

Most children love reading books. They always seem fascinated with large images and colours. My 5-year-old son is the same. There are certain books he enjoys more than others. He prefers the ones which have nice large drawings or simple ones that don’t seem too cluttered.

I was at a MPH a few weeks back and decided to try The Kampung Boy with him. I read it to him in my own style, adding some sound effects and over-exaggerating some phrases.

He was so mesmerized by the book that we went on to get Town Boy and Kampung Boy: Now & Then.

There is just something about Lat’s drawings that make it timeless. Another good thing with this book is that it introduces lots of things about the Kampung to my son. I also shared some of my own memories growing up in Kuala Krai, Kelantan with him. Things like playing gasing, kites, marble and so on.

Try this book with your kids. If you have not read it yourself, you are certainly missing out on this classic. It’s only priced at RM19.90 and you can get it at most major bookstores.

Note: There is a more expensive print of this which is the international edition, so look out for the Malaysian print. It is available in English and Bahasa Melayu.
