If I could pick one book for anyone to read about our beautiful country Malaysia, I’ll pick “A Malaysian Journey” by Rehman Rashid.
What is this a book about? In the authors own words,
A work of non-fiction, contemporary affairs, pop history and personal memoir.
After many publishing companies refused to release it, Rehman Rashid self-published the book in 1993. I am not sure if it became an instant hit as soon as it was released but it garnered a lot of positive reviews and is on most people’s must read list when it comes to books about Malaysia.
It was completely sold out and difficult to come by all these years.
Thankfully, he decided to re-print the books and the updated edition was released last year (2016) together with his follow-up book titled “Peninsula”. (I’ll write about Peninsula soon.)
A Malaysian Journey is one of the best books on contemporary Malaysia that is available out there. A must read for anyone, especially Malaysians!
The revised edition is still available at some local bookstores (MPH, Borders, Kinokuniya & Silverfish). When I bought it in 2016, it was priced at RM50 (Hardcover).
Note: At the time of this posting, Rehman Rashid is in intensive care after suffering a heart attack while cycling. We pray that he recovers soon. If you view his Facebook page, you can see more of his writings, especially about his hometown and his cycling.
Write-Lah! focuses on reviews of movies, music and books (not necessarily new releases) with an emphasis on local talent here in Malaysia.
